Nobel Prize in Literature Won by Bob Dylan


Lots of strong reactions to the news that Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. I don't have an opinion about it one way or the other -- I admire Dylan a lot but tend to enjoy him more in theory than in everyday use -- but my friend Jerome Murphy had a take on the unusual pick that I found provocative:

Bob Dylan and five decades of songs about social change. Blowing in the wind, The times they are a changing. Musical lyrics are poetry. Honor a man while he is alive and forget all these people who think their book got shat on

Remember that Dylan was mostly about what he had to say and that the lyrics stand on their own as verse. "The Times They Are A-Changing" would have been powerful as an editorial published on the front page of every paper with no music.
