Song of the Day: 'Live' by the Merry-Go-Round

This one's for Russell, an old friend whom I just found out died about a year ago. Because of a series of health and addiction issues, I hadn't seen him in about 10 years -- he, Scooter and I went to Trump Tower, of all places -- but always kept a watchful eye on him online. Scooter -- through whom I met Russell, who started as a patron of his arts -- also just found out, noting: "I saw him go from millionaire to completely broke four times."

It certainly was a life of extremes, one I'm happy to have crossed paths with. RIP, Russell.

The original Emitt Rhodes version ...

Russell and Scott in 1989

Scott writes:
Our good friend Russell Beer passed away on Monday from a heart attack. Russ had been a part of my life for 30 years. On his best days, Russ was an incredibly generous friend. Smart and funny and dark and complicated. He was an interesting guy. Loved his Heavy Metal, and his awesome fishing boat, Kalifornia. Those fishing trips down in Cabo were some of the best days. And I am glad that I was able to spend quality time with him on his boat. He was responsible for taking care of virtually every bar tab our last couple years of college, much to my educational demise. But, I wouldn't trade those moments for anything now. He was my Fraternity brother, hockey teammate, drinking buddy, concert goer, travel partner, wingman, and confidant. However, we were not very close the past few years, and that is bothering me today. The Russ that we knew will be missed. My heart is heavy today, thinking about his recent struggles. I hope he has found peace. He deserves to be remembered! God bless you Russ, and my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Song of the Day: 'Time' by Rosanne Cash

I've been a fan of women singing (Tom) Waits ever since Tracey Thorn covered "Downtown Train" back in '92. Now a dozen other women have had the honor, as part of "Come Up to the House: Women Sing Waits," a new tribute to the influential singer/songwriter, who turns 70 next month.

P.S.

Damian informs me that another lady -- his lady -- covered it on her "Strange Little Girls" LP back in 2001.

Weekend Tennis Roundup

Rafael Nadal, the year-end World No. 1, finished his season on a high by leading Spain to its sixth Davis Cup title. Nadal defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-6(7) to clinch Spain’s 2-0 win against Canada. "It has been an amazing week," Nadal said on court after his win. "I could not be happier, honestly. It has been an unforgettable moment here in this amazing stadium. The crowd was just a joke, we can't thank all of them enough. Our team spirit prevailed. We fought hard." Nadal, who is now a four-time Davis Cup titlist, won all eight of his matches this week in Madrid, including five singles victories in which he did not drop a set. The 33-year-old has now won 29 consecutive Davis Cup singles matches, improving his singles record in the event to 29-1.

I still don't quite understand the new format. But if it leads to someone getting scooped up by Feliciano Lopez like this, I guess I'm OK with it ... not to mention these:

Denis knows of what he speaks.

And though Canada lost in the final, Vasek Pospisil was undoubtedly the event’s MVP.

I wanna go to rehab ...

Russia lost in the semis ...

But we learned Karen's a top ...

The British were cumming ...

The British were cumming!

And Nikola Mektic, whose ass rivals countryman Borna Coric, and former doubles partner (cum coach) Franko Skugor still make a hot team.
