Sunday Comics

I have a lot more contempt for those handful of people in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin who knew better but couldn't be bothered to vote Democratic because they "just didn't like" Hillary Clinton. But if we're being honest, irony doesn't even begin to explain what RBG ended up helping do to women.

A weekly look at what's making news in the gay magazines:

Song of the Day: 'Is That All There Is?' by Debbie Harry (live at the Hollywood Bowl)

Imagine my delight waking up yesterday to discover that my girl Debbie Harry -- with the Count Basie Orchestra backing -- had performed not one, but four songs at the Tribute to Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra concert the night before at the Hollywood Bowl. All of them were delightful. But of course "Is That All There Is?" is the most iconic -- and suits her to a tee.

On a more somber note: It's hard to not think about the fact that Debbie and Joni Mitchell are merely 20 months apart in age, yet their recent appearances are like night and day, with Debbie singing and moving about the stage like a woman a fraction of her years. Damian's mom and my mom also similarly aged, yet his still travels to world capitals and tends her garden while my mom -- who looked so forward to her golden years to be able to travel -- is all but wheelchair bound these days. Life is cruel that way, so I guess the takeaway, as always, is to enjoy it while you can.

Song of the Day: 'I Don't Feel Like Dancing' by Scissor Sisters

The couple songs of the Scissor Sisters I've heard make me wonder if I would have been an actual fanboy had I not stopped paying attention to most new music decades ago.

Jake Shears and I chatted online one night after I learned we went to rival high schools in Mesa, Ariz. -- what a cutie pie!

If "Take Your Mama" is a lost Elton John song, this is Andy Gibb's missing fourth No. 1!

How about dancing in the sheets?

Fasten Your Seatbelts, Straighties

The person who drew this has obviously never been around a heterosexual relationship, quite possibly the most unnatural thing I have ever witnessed.
"Are you mad at me?" [baby voice]
And that about sums it up.

Song of the Day: 'Dancing in the Dark' by Stacey Q

Although my onetime claim to fame was having been Stacey Q's Mercedes Boy for a day -- I ferried her in a 560SEL to and from the 1990 Long Beach Pride Festival, where she was one of the headliners -- I've never actually listened to any of her music beyond her two radio hits. (This is where I would normally say "Everyone didn't have a camera with them at all times back then," but then I have to admit my friend did take a photo of the car -- probably because it was hilarious seeing me attempt to drive such a boat -- but nothing of the talent, much less a pic-with!) So the other afternoon I played her debut album, inspired by blogger Matthew Rettenmund, who wrote
"I am not exaggerating when I say that in a world with the Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Aretha, one of my very favorite albums is Stacey Q's 'Better Than Heaven.'"
I already loved "We Connect" and "Two of Hearts" -- but Matt wasn't entirely exaggerating when he described it as "a perfect disc." (The title track is so sweet I may have need a filling, and "Music Out of Bounds" has debut Madonna album outtake appeal! A special two-disc version of the album is coming this fall.)

When I told my Michigan childhood best friend about my "discovery," he replied:
"Bitch, I've known that for 35 years. I had the cassette decades ago -- Doug Semig and I would play it nonstop driving to Menjo's!"

But no sooner did I become a convert did I come to find out that Stacey actually had a self-titled five-song EP that came out the year before, available only on cassette. In addition to an early version of "Two of Hearts," it also features a cover of the classic Kim Wilde single "Dancing in the Dark" -- from Kim's "Catch as Catch Can" (1983) LP -- that I somehow never heard about until now ... which left me no choice but to make it today's Song of the Day.

Sounds like someone could use a Niles Rodgers remix!

Song of the Day: 'Mascara Streakz' by Altered Images

What's not to love about there being new music from Altered Images, the first since 1983's "Bite." (If anyone has Clare Grogan's scrapped solo album, 1987's "Trash Mad," please send it over!) "Mascara Streakz" is the title track from the forthcoming LP,  which will be released on Aug. 26. (Pre-order HERE.) "Glitter Ball" is the second release from "Mascara Streakz," and you can hear another album track, "Beautiful Thing," HERE

In addition to the new album, the group is set to hit the road in September for a string of headline U.K. tour dates.
