KIT212: Year in Review 2022

Just a quick post to say thank you for the support this past year. It's been a difficult 12 months with another member of my immediate family as well as my sister-in-law undergoing cancer treatments. Happy to report that they are both doing remarkably well thus far, all things considered.

To mark the end of 2022 -- my 17th(!) year of blogging -- I thought I would share the 10 most popular posts of the past 12 months. (A lot of meat fans reading my blog, I see!)

Here's wishing you all a healthy and prosperous year ahead.

Vivienne Westwood Dies at 81

It's a pity it took the fashion designer's death for me to post this photo of Vivienne Westwood along with model Jordan (who died earlier this year at just 66 of the same type of cancer that claimed my brother's life) and Chrissie Hynde at the infamous Sex boutique on King's Road back in 1976.

“I don’t think punk would have happened without Vivienne and Malcolm {McLaren],” the Great Pretender wrote in her memoir. “Something would have happened,” she continued, “and it might have been called punk, but it wouldn’t have looked the way it did, even in America. And the look was important.”

Indeed. Rest in punk.

Song of the Day: '25th December' by Tracey Thorn

Fitting that I should discover these gems while lying in bed late on the 25th of December. That I, perhaps the biggest Everything but the Girl fan in the U.S., had never heard about the four bonus tracks that were added to Tracey Thorn's sublime holiday album, "Tinsel and Lights," for an iTunes re-release has me wondering how many other fans missed them too. Tracey's "cover" of "25 December," which Ben performed on "Amplified Heart," has been uploaded by a fan on YouTube. But how long it will stay there is anyone's guess -- so enjoy now and order the songs before the iTunes store gets closed down altogether.

Listen to the acoustic "Joy" HERE.

P.S. How excited are we that Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn are reuniting for a new LP?

As they count down the days until its release, they've been posting a bunch of fun stuff over on the official EBTG Instagram account, including this background piece about today's SOTD.

Song of the Day: '500 Miles' by Rosanne Cash

Although it's not officially about Christmas, no song makes me more homesick around the holidays than "500 Miles." That people aren't even positive who wrote it -- it's generally credited to Hedy West -- only adds to the lore. When Rosanne Cash included it on her 2009 album, "The List," I sent my mom a copy autographed by Rose for Christmas, with a note saying that the song always made me think of her (Mom). That she later said she "didn't get" the connection -- for the uninitiated the lyrics include this passage: Teardrops fell on Momma’s note/When I read the things she wrote/She said "we miss you hon,' we love you ... come on home" -- solidified my status as an unrequited Mama's Boy. But I love the song and my mother all the same.

Bobby Bare, of "Sylvia's Mother" fame, had the biggest hit with it. Peter, Paul and Mary and Joan Baez also did nice versions.
