CBC Investigation Says Buffy Sainte-Marie Has Falsely Claimed Her Native Identity
While to the average American Buffy Sainte-Marie may sound like the funnest drag queen ever, I'm told by a reader Up North that she's anything but:
Not sure if this is making much news in the US, but here in Canada is an expose of Buffy. It’s painful for many of us here because she is such an icon and trailblazer but the fraud seems irrefutable. Journalistically, I think this episode is a tour de force.

Loved It Beyond a ‘Shadow of a Doubt’
Damian and I caught the late show of "Shadow of a Doubt" last night at the Village East, part of the cinema's annual Hitchcock-tober fest. As you've probably figured out, I'm not a full-blown movie queen, so I confess that I had never even heard of it. Turns out it's a good one -- apparently Hitch's favorite of his works -- leaving us on the edge of our seats with so many uncomfortable moments as the plot thickens. Nice to see Joseph Cotten play a completely different character than he did in "Gaslight," which is how I know him. And now I'm eager -- and inspired -- to see more of Teresa Wright, who I know I'm a bad gay for not having already eaten up in "Mrs. Miniver," "The Little Foxes" and "The Best Years of Our Lives," three films on my "I Should Have Already Seen" list.
P.S. A few more movies I've finally watched:
"Sophie's Choice," which I mentioned HERE. Obviously Meryl Streep was spectacular being Meryl Streep, and Kevin Kline is ridiculously handsome. But boy was I not aware of the fact that it was about the Nazi persecution of Slavs rather than Jews. Maybe I'm too woke to appreciate it now.
Also finally watched "Goodbye, Columbus." I'm not the biggest Philip Roth fan -- apparently his misogyny is supposed to charming or something -- but this film based on his short story of the same name reined it in enough for me to be able to enjoy it. It helped that the much-maligned Ali MacGraw is spectacular to look at, as is the guy (Michael Meyers) playing her brother. (Did you notice the weird sexual energy between him and Richard Benjamin's character?)
And for Halloween, Damian wanted to watch "The Witches of Eastwick." I'm a HUGE Cher fan but had never seen it, due to my strict realism policy. I can't say I regret watching it -- it was fun seeing the leads back in the day, and Cher on a bike was second only to Kermit! -- but as predicted it wasn't really my cup of tea. (Maybe I'm too dense literal for this type of stuff: They were witches but didn't really know they were? Jack Nicholson's character shouldn't have been hurt/upset that these three women with whom he formed a polyamorous relationship suddenly and coldly cut him off without giving it a second thought? Or?) All I know for sure is that Veronica Cartwright stole the film.
Crazy to think that Cher had THREE major motion pictures that year -- "Witches" followed by "Suspect" and then "Moonstruck" -- and then other than "Mermaids" kind of faded away from Hollywood. (I may have seen "Faithful" on cable but never saw "Tea With Mussolini," which of course was way after the fact.)

Who says going to the office is a total waste of time?
Noticed a new coffee joint this afternoon on my way to the subway -- and cannot wait to check it out, even if I fear for its longevity. (Its predecessor was a Jewish deli of sorts that somehow couldn't make it ... on the Upper West Side of Manhattan!)
Self-described as a “family-owned, cozy and hip coffee shop with a European vibe,” Picky Barista offers Stumptown coffees, avocado toasts, egg and cheese croissants, prosciutto mozzarella and pesto sandwiches and overnight oats, plus pastries ranging from apple cakes to cinnamon rolls to vegan banana-walnut muffins.
“All of our pastries are homemade on premises and are inspired by the recipes of Mama Bulic, who also helps out in the kitchen,” reads the cafĂ©’s website. “Coming from Serbia, you will notice a big Balkan influence in our menu. Allow yourself to be transported to that magical land with our Balkan coffee, our burek, or our baklava."

As best I can tell, the shop -- which also has locations at 102/Broadway, 92nd/Columbus and 82nd/Lexington -- recently changed its name from Peaky Barista, although I'm not sure why. (Cease and desist order from Steven Knight?)

UPDATE: A little bit of a bummer. Seems it's just a soft opening for now. Ice machine wasn't working -- I'm an iced latte queen -- and the kitchen isn't up and running, so just pastries in the display case. I'm told things will be fully function in two weeks, so I will definitely be going back for the full experience.

Lies, Damn Lies and Critics
This is just a little reminder -- to myself, more than anyone -- that while critics, reviews and your friends' opinions can be useful, sometimes you just need to judge a work of entrainment for yourself.
Yesterday I received this (much-appreciated) message from my friend Greg:
Has anyone watched the new Frasier? It's just as sharp and funny as the original... and crazy to think he's played this same character for 40 years
To which I replied:
We JUST watched and thought the exact same thing. EVERY review said it was unbearable -- to the point that we weren’t even going to bother. So boy were we surprised at how enjoyable it is.
Meanwhile, I FINALLY watched “Sophie’s Choice” in its entirety -- you know, the Oscar-winning adaptation of the acclaimed novel. The world really needed the plight of a non-Jewish person targeted by Nazis to be better known. 🙄
To which he replied:
One of my favorite jokes was Frasier trying to decide on a sofa saying it’s a real “Sofa's choice.” Is that why you watched the movie? You didn’t get the reference?
🤣🤣🤣
Jack Cutmore-Scott is adorable as the grownup Freddy, acting as a Martin 2.0. Anders Keith is spot-on as David Crane, son of Niles and Daphne. And Frasier's collogues Olivia and Alan -- played by Toks Olagundoye and Nicholas Lyndhurst -- are both sharp and hilarious.
But with headlines like: Review: ‘Frasier’ Returns, Tossed, Scrambled and Eggscruciating, it feels like people are going out of their way to dislike the show -- NYT critic James Poniewozik is pretending to hold against it that Frasier did eventually become a TV star because he'd turned down the opportunity ... in 2004(!) and that Freddy outgrew being a nerd, because that's never happened(!) -- in an attempt to go viral with the wittiest takedown.
Although we probably don't need 11 new seasons of it, here's hoping the latest incarnation of "Frasier" sticks around for a while -- or at least as long as it would like to. Others may -- and have -- disagree. But I'm happy I gave it a shot.
