Show Some Respect

Some of my friends went to see the legendary Tina Turner last night at Madison Square Garden (yes, I'm totally jealous). Can't wait to hear the details (Chris?) Let's hope they're nicer than this review by J. Freedom du Lac in The Washington Post. Because if THIS is a RAVE then I'd hate to see when his claws come out.

Besides referring to her age more than a dozen times ("the Jack LaLanne of female rock stars"), Josh had these kind words for everyone's favorite Nut Bush gal:

  • Live, with Turner's seven-piece band playing a faithful version (of "What's Love Got to Do With It") that was heavy on synthesizers, the 1984 smash came across like an almost laughable period piece, suggesting that Turner has aged far better than some of her own hits. Her strong, wailing vocal confirmed it.

  • What no longer resonates: That ridiculously campy Aunty Entity get-up from "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome," which Turner wore -- complete with massive blond wig -- during "We Don't Need Another Hero." Was I the only one in the arena wondering whether the production manager had invited the drag-queen Tina sitting near the stage to stand in for the star during the song?

  • The ultimate rock-and-roll survivor isn't totally ageless, of course -- and not only because she isn't quite as lithe or nimble as she once was. Notably, Turner's already rough voice is even coarser now, but with less lift, clarity and control; during several songs Sunday, including her old 007 theme "GoldenEye," she stumbled while attempting high-flying vocal runs, her singing sounding more like screeching.

  • Was this an acid queen talking or was Josh just being a typical male? We may never know.

The Washington Post guy is nuts.

Tina was amazing! I'm not even a big fan, but she's a real rock star. The crowd went nuts, her vocals sounded as good as ever (she put her back-up singers to shame; they were completely irrelevant). Proud Mary was unbelievable. It got a little slow with some of those bad 80s songs (Private Dancer? Possibly the worse song ever written), and she sang most of the second act sitting on a stool, but she is 69 and sounded great the whole time. She starts the show in skin-tight black biker shorts; it's hard to believe her ass is for real. I hope I look as good when I turn 29 again (next year) as she does at 69.

And btw Tom Cruise walked right by me and I think gave me the eye. Poor Katie.
