Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek were victorious at Wimbledon. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW
Note: Someone asked me what I thought of two recently banned players winning. I actually don't think much -- I feel like today's drug testing is so sophisticated that it really does pick up pretty benign stuff that can be explained away -- but maybe I'm naive to be so forgiving.
I can't say I was surprised that Jannik Sinner pretty much dismissed Carlos Alcaraz to win his first Wimbledon title -- handling the Spaniard his only loss in a major final. But that doesn't mean I enjoyed it. The Italian was sweet and humble in his victory, so it could have been worse. But he sure doesn't excite me much -- he's as German as they come -- so it's going to be a long decade ahead of he's finally figured out how to beat Carlitos.
On the women's side, I was OK with Iga Swiatek's finally finding her way out of the woods to capture her first major in over a year -- and at the most unlikely of them. But what an embarrassment to see the person who bravely ousted the No. 1 seed completely collapse on center court, unable to even win a game. Yes, many men have been overwhelmed in their first major finals too. But never have they put on a display this dismal. Even 16-year-old Pam Shriver gave Ice Maiden Chris Evert a match in the 1978 U.S. Open final -- what the hell happened here????
Great to see Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool become the first all-British team to win the men's doubles crown since 1936. The sexpots dispatched Rinky Hijikata of Australia and David Pel of the Netherlands in straight sets, 6-2 7-6.
No. 8 seeds Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens fought past No. 4 seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Jelena Ostapenko 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a 2-hour and 23-minute thriller to take the women's doubles trophy.
And in mixed doubles, Dutch fox Sem Verbeek and Katerina Siniakova took out Britain's Joe Salisbury and Brazilian partner Luisa Stefani 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-3) in the final on Centre Court on Thursday.
My eyes were glued to the set, for obvious reasons ...
I have zero inside information. But given how homophobic Poland has been in recent years, does anyone else question whether this is merely Iga's "psychologist"?

Interesting that both winners of this year´s Wimbledon singles finals have just finished serving bans for doping. Coincidence?
