#ThrowbackThursday

Was tickled to death to receive this old photo from my childhood friend Lisa in Detroit the other day. From my hair I'd guess it was the summer of '85, at the height of my Paul Weller/Style Council obsession -- right before my friends and I drove up to Toronto to basically go record shopping! (I was walking alone one night on Yonge Street when I got cruised for the first time, which scared the hell out of me!) I wish there were an app that could magically send everyone photos others have of them that they never knew existed -- what a wonderful world it would be!

Thursday Ad Watch

These ads for digital marketing agency American Eagle are supposed to be funny -- yet I find the guy in them to be no laughing matter. Watch BELOW.

Lost in the '80s: Christmas Edition

This morning my Michigan childhood best friend texted me this Christmas card I'd sent him back in 1986. Not sure what makes me most wistful -- remembering the days when our music-obsessed friendship was the center of my world (Debbie Harry on "Andy Warhol's 15 Minutes"!), the mention of my long-passed childhood cats (Tweet and Cluster) or thinking back to that evening my brother Bill and I drove down to Tucson in his tiny Honda CRX to see Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova play an exhibition match. Life really does go by in a flash. xo

#ThrowBackThursday

My friend Greg posted a photo outside the National Gallery of Art’s East Building yesterday, and it reminded me that I used to work there -- my first job in Washington after leaving The Orange County Register in 1993. (I'd nearly forgotten!) I was crashing on Capitol Hill with my brother Bill at the time -- Terence lived just a few blocks away in an apartment he referred to as "the suckhole" -- while I tried to "reinvent myself" (at age 25!) after a few years in Los Angeles. The night I arrived on US Air (as it was known then) at National Airport (as it was known then), it was snowing like crazy as Bill and I raced home to watch Steffi Graf vs. Monica Seles in the Australian Open final. (Monica would win in three and be stabbed by a crazed Steffi fan -- who wasn't me -- weeks later.) In classic Bill fashion, he took control of my job and apartment hunt -- filling out my SF-171 and finding my efficiency in the Ravenel off Dupont Circle. The job didn’t last long -- I worked in the gallery’s library and I missed being in a newsroom -- but it was a fun experience and I will always cherish those five years my brothers and I turned the nation's capital into dateline: WALSHINGTON

#ThrowbackThursday

My sister, Jennifer, and I check out progress on our swimming pool back in 1979, the year we moved to Phoenix. I miss those days when all the siblings still lived at home. #DaisyDukes #tubetops

#ThrowbackThursday

Always fun to look through old pictures with my mom. Comforting to know my big brother Bill was mildly amused by me from the get-go!

But I'm not sure how one of Chrissie Hynde's school photos got in the box ...

A Bolger in My Pants

#TBT When I came face to face with John Bolger in 2007, who was the object of my desire since I saw him in the seminal gay film "Parting Glances" in 1986. (Charming, but probably could have done without my explaining how I used to "use" photos of him -- oops!)

Seeing Robert and Michael's relationship in "Parting Glances" was the first time I realized being gay could be "normal."

Fun facts: Bolger played Samantha's lover who liked baby talk on "Sex and the City." He is the great nephew of Ray Bolger, who played the Scarecrow in "The Wizard of Oz."

He also played Jason Alexander's brother(!) on the short-lived sitcom "Everything's Relative" in 1987.

#ThrowbackThursday

Might try to recreate this late '60s moment when I visit my older brothers in DC on Saturday. From the look on Bill's face, I'm guessing he had just heard that North Vietnam had launched the Tet Offensive!

‪#‎TBT‬ Does this make me a trendsetter? In 1988 I took a (Polaroid) selfie of my first beard. (I told you I was obsessed with the Manson murders ...)

Party Like It's 1999

My #ThrowbackThursday is me ringing in 1999 at the now-defunct bar Hell in the Meatpacking District with Dave, Larry and Kevin. Hard to believe Larry has been gone (but not forgotten) 10 years next week. Hope everyone has a fun and safe New Year's Eve -- and a memorable 2016!

#TBT Dancing with my mom -- with my old hair color and her old spine -- at my brother Bill's wedding in Vegas in 2000. For those kind enough to ask, she is slowly making progress since her surgery, now using a walker instead of a wheelchair. My stepfather is doing better, too. Looking forward to seeing them both at Thanksgiving. xo

Throwback Thursday

Heartened to see this photo pop up on a Facebook cousin's feed. That's my dad on the right holding my cousin Kathleen (Shay) Stein, and my cousin Bob Lindes holding my cousin Michael Shay in December 1953. My Irish dad is the tied-for-second-to-youngest of nine kids, hence the weirdness in ages vs. relations! #Pottsville

#ThrowbackThursday

This was summer of 2002 when Ken and I visited my family in Phoenix before going to L.A. (Taken at first boyfriend Derek's place.) I remember the year so well because my sister was eight months pregnant with her first child -- nephew A.J. -- and 2002 was the last year gay men wearing Abercrombie & Fitch was acceptable!

(They Were) Really Saying Something

Not only was this #ThrowbackThursday on Instagram Bananarama posted with Andy Warhol in 1986 the greatest thing ever, their comment to a fan who wanted to know if they'd ever met Madonna was almost as good:

Yes met @madonna in 1984. We went to her show in LA. It was her first tour. We met her afterwards, she said she used to dance to Really Saying Something at the Danceteria in NYC 😉 xx
