Music Box: 'Shout to the Top' by The Style Council

Wow, I love YouTube! First time I've ever seen this clip of my childhood hero Paul Weller performing "Shout to the Top" with his Style Council on some show back in 1984. How I idolized the Jam man -- did everything in my power to look and dress just like him. Nothing can take you back in time like a song can, and I just set foot in my childhood bedroom in Mesa, Arizona, and set the needle on the 12-inch import single my brother brought home from college. The song is as hypnotic today as it was then, as is Paul's fringe ...

Ah, those were the days, buying the Melody Maker, NME and Sounds and devouring them to find out about new bands 6 months before everyone else did.

Hmmm...you have a bit of a stiffy in that photo, am I legally allowed to notice it?

this was always one of my favourite Style Council songs. And yes you do look a bit like Mr. Weller in that photograph!

@MartyMartyMarty: I LOVE the Loleatta Holloway version! I mentioned it in my writeup about her passing last year. She was great.

I'm always fascinated by your music postings, as 95% of the time I've never heard of the song or the artist. Sometimes (like with this one) I'll give a listen just to see if it sounds familiar/triggers a memory. Nothing.

I was here in the '80s but I guess my attention was directed elsewhere!
