Weekend Tennis Roundup

UPDATE:

OMFG, Carlos! Damian and I were in our adorable rental on Masonic in Ptown intermittently watching -- and then turning off in horror -- as it looked like Alcaraz was going to go down. The way he came back from two sets and then later three championship points to defend his title has turned me from a fan into a superfan!

Major number two for Coco! Neither Gauff nor Aryna Sabalenka played particularly well. But all the credit in the world to the young American for being the steadier of the two, defeating the Belarussian 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 to win her first title at Roland Garros.

Afterward, veterans Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos won the men’s doubles final for their first major title together at the combined age of 79.

Talk about a good-looking final!

And in the last women's match of Roland Garros 2025, the Italian No. 2 seeds Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini held off unseeded Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan and Aleksandra Krunic  of Serbia 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 to capture the women's doubles title. What a fortnight for 38-year-old Errani to take home two trophies!

So for the first time in forever we actually have the No. 1 and 2 seeds from both the men's and women's games squaring off in a major final. I'm heading to Provincetown for the weekend -- my birthday is Sunday -- so decided to post this smorgasbord of ATP beef in advance, which you can chew on BELOW.

I'll update this when I return Monday, where we will definitely have a first-time female champ and possibly a male one as well!

The first Roland-Garros silverware was handed out on Thursday inside Court Philippe-Chatrier, as Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori defeated Taylor Townsend and Evan King for their first Roland-Garros mixed doubles title, 6-4, 6-2. With the win, Errani and Vavassori became the first Italian mixed doubles champions in Paris since 1958 as they claimed their second major mixed doubles title in less than a year, along with last year’s U.S. Open crown.

Beautiful Lorenzo, how does that body of yours possibly break down?
