Weekend Tennis Roundup

Titles for Auger-Aliassime, Cîrstea, Boulter and Bejlek; 14 nations advanced in Davis Cup action; Marcos knows you're looking; Serena's coming back; Marton's got a boner; plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.

Chile, Spain, Canada, France, Germany, Croatia, Czechia, USA, Great Britain, Ecuador, South Korea, India, Austria and Belgium advanced to the second round of the Davis Cup, and will compete on the weekend of Sept. 18-20.

Félix Auger-Aliassime successfully defended his Open Occitanie title in Montpellier, France, taking out home favorite Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 7-6(4) in the final to claim his first title of the 2026 season.

Sorana Cîrstea won the Transylvania Open, embarrassing top seed Emma Raducanu 6–0, 6–2 in the final. This victory marks the 35-year-old's fourth career WTA singles title and her first-ever title on home soil in Romania.

Qualifier Sara Bejlek made history in Abu Dhabi Open by defeating world No. 11 Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6(5), 6-1 to become the first qualifier -- and first Czech player -- to win the tournament, capturing her maiden WTA singles title after starting the week ranked No. 101. You may recall the patronymicless Czech made headlines a few years ago when her father/coach got a little too handsy for the public's liking(!).

Britain's Katie Boulter won her fourth career WTA singles title on Saturday at the Ostrava Open in the Czech Republic, with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win over Germany's Tamara Korpatsch.

UPDATE: Forgot to mention this. What's up with tennis players and bizarro mishaps involving glass, namely Serena Williams and Sam Querrey?

Dusan Lajovic is recovering after a freak head injury during the Davis Cup Qualifiers in Santiago on Friday. The 35-year-old Serbian suffered the accident after a tight loss to Chile’s Tomas Barrios Vera, when he hurried toward the locker room to grab an energy gel for a cramping teammate and slammed headfirst into a glass panel in the tunnel.

Lajovic was taken by ambulance to Clinica Universidad de Los Andes with a cranial contusion, a cut to his upper lip requiring stitches, possible loosened teeth and a bruised left knee. He did not lose consciousness, and doctors later said he is expected to recover, though he was ruled out for the remainder of the tie. Get well soon, cutie!

And lastly:

Serena Williams is definitely coming back. Not sure how it will translate at 44, but all those people who defeated her in major finals after she gave birth the first time should be thanking their lucky stars that the GOAT hadn't discovered GLP-1 drugs yet, because the only thing stopping her was her inability to move. I'm assuming this is going to louse up her first-year entry into the Hall of Fame come 2027!
