Idahoan Admits to Brutally Murdering Gay Man as He Pleaded for His Life

This is rough, guys. Steven Nelson, a 49-year-old openly gay man, drove to a Walmart parking lot in Idaho in April expecting to meet a male escort he connected with via Backpage.com. Instead, the bearded, tattooed man waiting for him (Kelly Schneider) asked him to drive to Gotts Point, where it turned out another man was lying in wait. Nelson was pushed to the ground and kicked at least 30 times with steel-toed boots while he begged for his life. Nelson was then choked and stripped of his clothing before the two men drove off in his car with the victim's wallet, credit cards and clothing. (He died shortly thereafter) The heinous crime has been compared by some in the community to the murder of Matthew Shepard, whose torture and subsequent death set off a nationwide debate about hate crimes and homophobia and led to the federal Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, under which Schneider has been charged. Heartbreaking that this is still a thing. Please look out for each other, and yourself. More about the twists and turns of this horrific case HERE.

Tragic story but a good reminders of the risk involve in meeting strangers- the victim might have been a bit too trusting.
