'Looking' Good

Got to see the first two episodes of "Looking" at a fun screening party at Houston Hall on Sunday night. I think HBO has a hit on its hands. I saw so much of my younger self in Jonathan Groff's Patrick, as he struggles to find his place in the world both professionally and romantically -- and I'm confident others will, too. I have never seen the original source material -- Michael Lannan's 2011 short film, "Lorimer," which was set in Brooklyn -- but the characters and premise definitely strike me as a solid foundation for a good run. And With Andrew Haigh of "Weekend" acclaim writing and producing, the show rings true in ways that Showtime's "Queer as Folk" never even seemed to try to.
