The State of Marriage Equality

Dorothy Samuels' editorial in Saturday's New York Times -- "The Long, Winding Road to Marriage Equality" -- is definitely worth a read.

She notes that for all of the progress we've made recently, "nearly 60 percent of Americans live in places that do not protect gay couples in any way." And even the repeal of DOMA, which is highly unlikely anytime soon, wouldn't do nearly enough:

"A repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and changes in state laws could lead to expanded rights for gay couples in more states. But revoking those state constitutional bans would take years, if not decades. Until then, rank discrimination under law will persist."
