Sean Hayes: 'Yep, I'm Gay' (!!!!!)

Sean Hayes finally comes clean about his sexuality in the new The Advocate, but don't expect him to be apologetic for not taking a stand during the height of his popularity. “I am who I am. I was never in, as they say. Never. ... I feel like I’ve contributed monumentally to the success of the gay movement in America, and if anyone wants to argue that, I’m open to it. You’re welcome, Advocate.”

I'll never understand why some people think actors, and musicians etc, should publicly declare their sexuality. Hayes had every right to decide to say nothing.

I'm troubled by the chattering classes on the interwebs that are all piling on Sean Hayes for not coming out sooner.

I was under the impression that "refusing to discuss or address" one's sexuality is effectively a way to come out whilst leaving the "ability to sell tickets in the bible belt" in his actor's bag of tricks.

What's the big deal?

Entertainers are funny people with painted faces who are here to help us escape reality for a little while. I'll perfectly OK with getting my activism elsewhere.

Well, duh! Sean Hayes practically admitted as much in the Advocate years ago when doing publicity for "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss" and then became rather coy when he found success on (and earned an Emmy for) "Will and Grace". To say that he has contributed "monumentally" towards the success of the gay movement in America is a bit over the top. I would argue that Mr. Hayes could have done more had been completely open during his multi-year television run. That said, Jack McFarland is, was, and always will be one of my favorite TV characters. Fey? Oh yes he was and I love him for it! But really, Mr. Hayes, don't break your hands patting yourself on the back.

The number of people shocked by this revelation must number way up in the single digits!

Then again, who cares??

LOL. Once again, The Advocate shows how irrelevant it has become. A coming-out interview with a has-been TV star. How earth shattering! No wonder the thing has been turned into a insert for another magazine.

His silence about being gay seemed to me to imply some sort of shame.

This interview might have been mildy interesting 10 years ago. Now it's just a cheap ploy for him to revive his non-existant career
