Feel the Spin

I'd hadn't even thought of Spin magazine in more than a decade when suddenly in one week I read that founder Bob Guccione Jr. was going to contribute to the upcoming 25th anniversary issue, a friend mentioned a great Where Are They Now? piece in the current edition (featuring Tanya Donelly of Belly and Justine Frischmann of Elastic) and my pal Jesse sent me a link to where Google Books had scanned and uploaded a whole bunch of back issues, including the January 1986 issue featuring the return of Debbie Harry, the first Spin I ever bought. I can remember being SO EXCITED when this came out -- post-"Feel the Spin" and pre-"Rockbird" -- Debbie and Chris' first big interview since the breakup of Blondie and Chris' illness. I'm re-reading the piece now and am kind of startled by how off-putting they're coming across, endlessly ripping on "the music business," about not having more money, about phonies in rock 'n' roll and how image and videos are ruining everything -- two things Blondie knew nothing about it. However, they do get more playful toward the end when discussing the "Teaneck Tanzi" period: "Are you the toughest female vocalist?" "No, I"m a pussycat. I'd hate to face the Weather Girls." "Debbie could take Kate Bush." "I could beat Cyndi Lauper, anytime, anyplace!" Debbie goes on to tell her fans that this isn't a comeback -- "we just took an extended vacation" -- and that "we love you."
