Stars on '54'

Here is some fun news regarding my earlier post about the 1998 bomb "54." Sources in La-La-Land tell me that Miramax will be putting out the much-discussed "director's cut" in September, along with director's commentary and interviews with the stars of the film. Director Mark Christopher's original vision of the film, which was finally seen for the first time at secret screening during last year's Outfest in Los Angeles, saw Ryan Phillippe's character as bisexual and featured screen kisses with several men, including Breckin Meyer, who since the film has been one of Phillippe's closest friends off-screen. (Soap stud Cameron Mathison also gets some man lovin' from a fellow bartender at the infamous nightclub!) The studio is said to have gotten skittish and demanded that 45 minutes of it be cut, and that additional scenes be shot to beef up what had been essentially a brief fling between Phillippe and Neve Campbell's soap opera star character to make it more of a full-blown relationship. While I'd like to say I am a big champion of artistic integrity, the truth of the matter is I'm just excited to finally see Ryan get frisky with some other dudes, something "White Squall" was sorely lacking.

In a "It happens in LA" story, I was at a brunch for my ex's birthday and talking with the few friends of his that I knew at the table when I heard "54" brought up. Worried that I was being too quiet I piped up how I had never seen it couldn't wait to see how awful it was. Then I was nudged and told that Mark Christopher, the director, was seated two friends away from me. So I quickly added,"... but I heard it wasn't your fault. Where IS that french toast?"
