Rasta-mon Vibrations

(EDITOR'S NOTE: This post was written by guest blogger Marc Lallanilla.)

A gay Jamaican man, held in detention for almost 4 years in Tacoma, Wash., won't be deported back to his homeland where homosexuality is illegal -- at least not yet.

Damion Bromfield, 30, has a green card and has lived in the U.S. legally for most of his life, but pleaded guilty a few years ago to a crime involving sex with an underage partner. (Bad boy, Damion. Only congressman can get away with that.)According to The Seattle Times, Bromfield's case was appealed to federal court, which ruled the immigration court must take a second look because of a "pattern and practice of persecution" of gays in Jamaica. The case may have repercussions nationwide, as other gay and lesbian asylum seekers come to the U.S. from backwards, homophobic countries like Jamaica.

(The federal court must have read my "International Desk" blog post from yesterday. Nice to know the judges are also fans of Kenneth in the 212.)

After being held in detention for 4 fuggin' years, I'd say this guy has done his time. Land of the Free, Home of the Brave ...

sex with an underage partner

That makes it sound consensual. No mention of rape or molestation.

He was 26 then, so how old was this kid? 17? 16? I have no problem with that. Any younger and that's not right....

I knew what I wanted at age 14 and went looking for it. I was happy to find the guys who would give it to me. (Most of them in their mid-twenties.)

To anonymous: I agree that sex with a minor is a no-no. And even though it might have been consensual, the guy is still not my idea of a "model citizen." However, he's been in detention for longer than most anyone being held (according to the Times article), so I'd say that's enough time to learn his lesson.
