Cut Above the Rest:

Novak Djokovic gave Roger Federer all he could handle in the final of the U.S. Open yesterday, and that still amounted to a straight-sets win for the Swiss living legend. The spikey-haired Serb had seven (yes, seven!) set points (five in the first and two in the second) yet was unable to convert. Afterward, even Federer had to admit that Djokovic deserved better than a straight-sets loss but I think most tennis fans would agree Djokovic's arrival is great for the game despite the outcome. Maria Sharapova sat with his camp fueling speculation that she may have been his consolation prize after the match, but the lanky ball-bouncing addict brushed off the talk ("just a friendship").

Sadly, Saturday's women's final lived up to its yawn-filled billing as Justine Henin routed Svetlana Kuznetsolva, 6-1, 6-3. Henin now has one more Grand Slam title than Venus Williams and just one less than Serena (how did that happen?).
