PoP! Goes My Heart

I never "got" Hugh Grant (despite my sister's insistence that he and I are the same person, minus the British accent, of course.) And Drew Barrymore's twisted mouth was cute when she was 8 (not 38). But I have to say that if their new film is half as brilliant as the parody '80s video by Hugh's former band, Pop!, then it can't be half bad. The song is infectiously perfect and the hilariously on-the-mark video -- one part Duran Duran, one part a-ha, with a splash of Wham! -- is definitely "Friday Night Videos"-ready. Scott Porter (Jason Street on "Friday Night Lights") shines as the band's dreamy lead singer, but it's Hugh Grant's "Planet Earth" hair and scarf that had me on the floor!

You may recall that my only complaint about "Dreamgirls" was that the Dreams didn't have any great songs that captured the Motown girl-group sound, the way "That Thing You Do" did for the Wonders in Tom Hanks' 1996 ode to the 1960s. Clearly this is not an issue for "Music and Lyrics," although the plot may be ...

(FYI: Stephen Colbert has a great video -- "Charlene (I'm Right Behind You)" -- by his old '80s band," Stephen and the Colberts that's equally perfect that has an Information Society slash Animotion quality to it. (View it here.)
