Carly Simon: 'Into White'

OK, before I say anything it's time for a little disclosure here. When all the cool kids in junior high were buying Supertramp, Journey, Billy Squier and REO Speedwagon albums, I was busy spending my cash building up my Carly Simon collection. "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," "Anticipation," "You're So Vain," "Nobody Does It Better," "You Belong to Me," "Vengeance," "Jesse" ... I just couldn't get enough. Even when Carly put our her pre-Linda Ronstadt "What's New" album of standards in 1981, the much-maligned "Torch," I remained loyal (bitch, I defy you to find a more heart-wrenching rendition of "I Get Along Without You Very Well").

While there isn't much of a market for new music from established artists of a certain age ([cough] Rod Stewart), albums of covers have become commonplace for artists like Simon and honestly, at the stage of her career, I can't think of a better way to hear from my girl (and at 61, Carly can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned). After 2005's more predictable big band / heavily orchestrated "Moonlight Serenade," Simon's back with a more relaxed and eclectic "covers" disc called "Into White." This time around, you get the impression that Carly was in complete control (she even produced it herself) -- and what she's delivered is an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink collection, Carly-style. Starting with the Cat Stevens title track to other classics like "Scarborough Fair," "Over the Rainbow," "You Are My Sunshine" and "Jamaica Farewell," there's nothing here not to love. So, yes, I'm biased. But I bought this CD early in the week and haven't turned it off since.

Check it out here.

My own gay disclosure: When the kids at Holmes Jr. High and Wheeling High School in northwest suburban Chicago were buying Supertramp, AC/DC, Journey, et.al., I was buying Donna Summer and the Sylvers! :^O

Anyway...thanks for the post, Kenneth. Can't wait to pick up the new Carly CD.

Hey Kenneth – first of all, I love your blog. Never wrote you before, though. I just wanted to say that I am an enormous fan of Carly as well (my fandom is enormous…I am a fairly normal size). I think INTO WHITE is simply stunning. It is really a return-to-form for her in many ways – amazing harmony, guitars, creative percussion, etc. Ben and Sally sound glorious with their mom, too. Incidentally, have you see Ben lately?! Hottie. Anyway, just wanted to say ‘kudos’ on your awesome blog…

Take care - Johnny, a singer in Ohio

I've seen a little of this CD on the TV ads and I am so far, very impressed. It's wonderful to see and artist come back, later in their career and do something so fine... as James Taylor did recently with his holiday album.
