Kitty E.R.

My furry little friend, Troy, is in the kitty emergency room on the Upper East Side tonight, recovering from near deadly hypoglycemic shock and several seizures. What he went through Sunday evening can only be described as harrowing. I am completely heartbroken and beyond angry.

As I said in my original post about Troy's diabetes diagnosis, I have absolutely no faith in veterinarians, and this has confirmed all of my worst fears.

Although Troy's vet didn't bother to tell me this, apparently there is no accurate way to check a cat's blood sugar at home. Yet this idiot has repeatedly increased Troy's insulin dosage based on these tests. Furthermore, when I called a friend of a friend who is also a vet and told her Troy's symptoms earlier tonight, she did not think it sounded like "a hypo," so I erroneously stopped administering the customary "honey under the tongue" en route to the hospital. (The emergency room doctor said that my doing this earlier may very well have saved his life.) I honestly do not know what to do at this point. Yes, I'm already looking for a new veterinarian, but they all seem to know very little.

For now, I just pray Troy will rebound from this nightmare, and that the seizures have not caused any permanent harm to him. The people at the emergency room were very nice and I'm hoping they take good care of my baby. It's awful lonely around here without him.

Emailed you (oh no, did I just piss off Bill?--By omitting the hyphen? But the hyphen is so 1998.). Much love to you and Troy, poor sweet thing. And I hate, hate, HATE your vet.

Dreadful. Poor Troy. Just because I'm deathly allergic to him doesn't mean I don't love the little guy. You should totally smear cat shit all over the vet office's door.

I'm sorry to hear about Troy's unfortunate situation. I like the word "recovering," however, because it leads me to believe he's going to be okay. I hope that's the case.

Poor Troy. I'll send good kitty vibes. I completely blame my vet for the death of my cat Howard last year. She collapsed on his exam table after he palpated her abdomen, and we had to put her to sleep when x-rays revealed internal bleeding! But on the other hand, I tried to keep in mind that it's gotta be hell to diagnose and treat a critter that can't communicate how it feels, what's wrong, etc. (And in Howard's case, she WAS 16. And yes, she was a she.)

Oh no! Poor Troy! (Everytime I read/write his name I hear you saying it.. "TROY" ... in the quick staccato way that you do). I'm sorry for the stupid vets... hope he feels better soon....

Hey there....very sorry about Troy's problems. Just wanted to say that I hope you know not all vets are callous and uncaring. And it is very very difficult to figure out what's wrong when our patients can't talk to us. I'm glad to hear Troy's back home, though and doing better. If you need a refernce for a good vet in your area, I'll be glad to research one for you.
