One Step Forward, Two 'Great' Steps Back
Excellent piece by Samara Lynn in Black Enterprise about New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's response to the "Make America Great Again" slogan. I know it took me until 2015 -- when Obergefell v. Hodges was decided favorably, and in a way it would not be just three years later thanks to those of you who thought staying home or voting for Gary Johnson and Jill Stein somehow allowed you to keep your hands “clean” -- before I felt I was an equal member of this country. And already my rights are being rolled back. I hope those of you who opted not to do the right thing can sleep at night, because it sure as hell isn’t getting any easier for anyone who doesn’t fit the straight-white-Christian-man mold of when the U.S. was supposedly so “great” to do so.

Dead Serial Bombing Suspect in Austin Railed on Homosexuality, Abortion
Read posts from his Mensa-approved blog HERE.
Relieved to see that this murderous lunatic has finally been stopped. Why am I not surprised to read that he's an angry white man who was home-schooled and has a lot of opinions about gay people and women's reproductive rights?
The suspect in the deadly bombings that terrorized Austin blew himself up early Wednesday as authorities closed in on him, bringing a grisly end to a three-week manhunt. But police warned that more bombs could be out there.
The young man behind the attacks was identified as Mark Anthony Conditt, an unemployed 24-year-old who bought bomb-making materials at Home Depot. His motive remained a mystery, along with whether he acted alone in the five bombings in the Texas capital and suburban San Antonio that killed two people and wounded four others.
Police zeroed in on Conditt using store surveillance video, cellphone signals and witness accounts of a strange-looking customer making purchases while wearing a disguise that included a blonde wig and gloves.
Officers located his vehicle at a hotel on Interstate 35 in the suburb of Round Rock. Officers were waiting for armored vehicles to arrive before moving in for an arrest when his vehicle began to drive away, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said at a news conference.
Authorities followed the vehicle, which ran into a ditch on the side of the road, he said.
When members of the SWAT team approached, the suspect detonated an explosive device inside the vehicle, the police chief said.
A law enforcement official provided the dead man's name. The official, who has been briefed on the investigation, spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
Investigators released few details about Conditt, except his age and that he was white. Online postings indicate he was home schooled. He later attended Austin Community College from 2010 to 2012, according to a college spokeswoman, but he did not graduate.
In posts dated from 2012, a blogger who identified himself as Mark Conditt of suburban Pflugerville wrote that gay marriage should be illegal and that homosexuality is "not natural.". He also called for the elimination of sex offender registrations and argued in favor of the death penalty. In addition, he railed on the government providing women with free abortions, saying, "If a woman does not want a baby, or is incapable of taking care of one, she should not participate in activities that were made for that reason."
Of gay marriage, Conditt wrote: "Homosexuality is not natural. Just look at the male and female bodies. They are obviously designed to couple."

Hyeon Chung Beats Tennys Sandgren in Australian Open Quarterfinal
Another wild night in Melbourne, as Angelique Kerber channeled her inner 2016 self to demolish Madison Keys (who I wanted to win the whole thing), Simona Halep destroyed Karolina Plishkova (who was about to be up two breaks in the first set before completely going away) and Hyeon Chung's Himderella story continued as he took out Tennys Sandgren, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to advance to the semifinals. (It was a highly entertaining match!)
I was curious if the commentators would acknowledge the controversy surrounding the ugly American's social-media posts, and to my surprise they did. Patrick McEnroe, who isn't usually my favorite, impressed me by not giving Sandgren a slide for being new to life in the spotlight, calling some of his views flat-out wrong.
But then Chris Fowler chimed in, calling Sandgren “thoughtful,” before adding that folks labeling him are doing so “without insight and research.”
Um, no. I had just complimented McEnroe via Twitter when I heard this, so I immediately responded to Fowler (above). No one is saying Sandgren can't learn from his mistakes. But there are consequences for your words and actions, and letting him off the hook because he seems like a "nice guy" just isn't acceptable.
I for one don't find people making fun of the LGBT community to be very nice.
Ball's in your court, Tennys.
Serena's tweet when Sandgren's match came up on was pretty great!
UPDATE: Looks like a double fault. Now the alt-right-curious player is blaming the media for his problems, a la Donald. Read HERE.

The Unbearable Darkness of Being
A Facebook friend recounts the youthful moment, with pinpoint precision, that he realized how the world perceived gay people -- not good -- via Billy Campbell's appearance on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" circa 1999.
Reminds me so much of my own, when Kate Jackson was on “The Tonight Show” in 1982 to promote “Making Love” — and when she told (guest host) David Brenner it was about homosexuality, the crowd reacted similarly. Brenner chastised the audience -- as did Billy and Rosie -- but I learned right then and there that I should be ashamed of myself -- and went from being an outgoing kid to a painfully self-conscious teenager and young man. I'd like to think the variety of LGBT people depicted on television these days has made it somewhat easier for kids today.

Standard Deviation
It amazes me how simple some people are. The other week on television I saw a sheriff investigating a murder who insisted he couldn't be racist for targeting a black man -- at whom no evidence pointed -- because he (the sheriff) "hadn't said the N-word in over 20 years." (It would be comical if this person didn't have the power to destroy people's lives.) Similarly, many people think that the only you can be "homophobic" is if you call someone the F-word. But this James Woods kerfuffle beautifully illustrates why none of this is true. Being racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, misogynistic (Hillary haters) or the like isn't usually demonstrated by outwardly disparaging certain groups. It's done by holding certain people to a different standard than you do others. (For example, you hate everything about how smug and awful Bryant Gumbel and Brian Williams are, but for some reason you only rant about the former.) I know I'm mostly preaching to the choir here. But it's something I better learned as an adult, so perhaps there's a lesson for some of you in here.
So what's good for the Baby is good for the Gayby ...

Armie Hammers James Woods
I'm not convinced anyone really cares what James Woods thinks about anything (he makes Sean Young seem sane). But good for Armie Hammer for letting the disturbed actor have it over his anti-gay tweet about "Call Me by Your Name," in which the "Social Network" hunk plays a 24-year-old man who has a steamy affair with a 17-year-old boy.
UPDATE:
The hypocrisy never ends with these people.
UPDATE 2: It gets BETTER!
