Sinner defends at the ATP Finals, but Alcaraz ends the year No. 1. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post -- including this Christian Harrison gif that keeps giving -- BELOW.
So neither the singles nor doubles went the way I wanted them to in this year's ATP Finals. But I will allow that it's better for the game that Jannik Sinner was able to narrowly win in two hard-fought sets, as we really don't need another "rivalry" where one person seems to dominate the other -- Carlos Alcaraz had won 7 of their last 8 meetings -- the way Nadal and Sampras seemed to almost always win in the majors against Federer and Agassi.
The good news for Carlos fans is that he definitely seems to be getting stronger indoors, so it's unlikely he'll end his career with zero year-end titles the way Rafa did.
Despite the loss, the Spanish superstar ended the year on top for the second time in his short career. Note: Why am I not surprised that the silver fox ATP chairmen is Italian. (What are they good for?)
Meanwhile, Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten captured their first ATP Finals crown as a team when they defeated Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski 7-5, 6-3 to snap the remarkable winning streak of two-time champion Salisbury, who captured the trophy in 2022 and 2023 with Rajeev Ram. Not the outcome I wanted, but hardly a shock given that the champions also won Wimbledon in 2024 and this year's Australian Open.
Your Average Joe would be happy to be this successful on the tennis court. But for four-time men's doubles Grand Slam champion Salisbury, this record had to be pretty devastating. Here's hoping his time off proves fruitful.
Earlier in the week: Nice to see recently retired players Juan Sebastian Cabal, Kyle Edmund, Robert Farah, Wesley Koolhof, Matwe Middelkoop, Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Diego Schwartzman all get honored in Turin ...
Naturally not even a suit could hide the Colombian doubles stud's signature asset
And congrats to developmentally disabled(?) American Christian Harrison and partner Evan King for qualifying for the ATP finals. They may have lost all three matches, but the MAGA pinup was looking like a young Kris Kringle under the lights in Turin -- and gave us a shirt change we won't soon forget!
Some kind words about the younger Harrison: "I’m so proud for Christian, who despite 8 surgeries and countless other injuries that would send most people packing and calling it a day, still puts in the work to be the best."
