Nonbinary Student Nex Benedict Died by Suicide, Says Oklahoma Medical Examiner

I just read that the medical examiner has ruled that Nex Benedict -- a 16-year-old nonbinary student who was reportedly the victim of bullying and involved in a well-publicized bathroom assault at school in Oklahoma -- died by suicide. As the story unfolded, I had a sickening feeling that this was going to be the case, a la Sandra Bland

Years ago, someone wisely pointed out that being LGBT can be isolating in a way like no other. When you're a member of another minority group -- black or Jewish (etc.) -- if no one else you typically at least have your family in the same boat. When you're LGBT, it can make you feel like it's you against the world, too often to tragic ends.

I sure hope Nex's death won't be in vain, because it will forever be heartbreaking. In case you haven't heard: Oklahoma lawmakers just cannot stop filing hateful bills against LGBT people and it must stop.

Rest in peace, little one.

Dude! Get off this 'every LGBT person is a victim' bullshit.

Nex started that fight. Nex lost that fight. Nex killed their-self. Nex was not a victim and Nex was not a hero. Nex is most certainly not a martyr. A sad, trouble teen, typical of this world we live in, yes, but nothing beyond that. If Nex wasn't declared 'non-binary', no one would have given two shits beyond 'oh, look, another sucided teen, what else is new?'

Why the hell does the wacky far-left keep dragging these people out and presenting them as fallen heroes? I get no one is perfect, but damn, almost to a one, the people presented these last several years as 'innocent victims' have been someone you would never want to be around.

Nex died one day after being beaten unconscious in a school bathroom, and following more than a year of bullying and harassment at school. This is heartbreaking. And we have heard from so many parents and students that this culture of bullying and harassment is both pervasive at Owasso Public Schools and that many within the school had actual knowledge that it was occurring and took no steps to fix it.

As parents, we send our kids to school expecting that they will be safe and cared for. Nex was failed by so many and should still be here today. We hold their family in our hearts as they grapple with the devastating reality that their beloved child, a teen with a bright future, is no longer making this world a brighter place.

Human Rights Campaign reiterates its call for a full and complete investigation. Young people in Oklahoma and across the country deserve to be safe and respected at school.
