Revisiting Lyle, the Effeminate Heterosexual

A friend my age (and fellow Prefab Sprout enthusiast) just saw "Lyle, the Effeminate Heterosexual" -- played by Dana Carvey in the early '90s on "Saturday Night Live" -- for the first time and asked:
"Am I bad that I laughed? I love old SNL clips because you can feel the tension between them being so embedded in the mainstream biases and mores of the period and the writers trying to find clever ways to subvert said biases and mores. The joke here is that everyone knows Lyle is gay and doesn't care. I honor the way such stereotypes make us feel; I find them both hilarious and unbearable at the same time. It's something about seeing some version of yourself represented on mainstream TV that has some ring of truth in it, even while you're being exaggerated and mocked. Complicated!"

So true. That the husband of the couple my parents spent the most time with when I was a child was exactly like Lyle only made me love this more -- the man was David Geffen's PRIVATE PILOT! (I'm not even joking.)

If you can not laugh during the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue part, remind me not to sit next to you at a dinner party!

I didn’t see this back in the day. I remember Carvey for his Bush Sr and Church Lady skits. But this feels a lot like Pat eho was androgynous. It’s a great bit because it for es us to question our assumptions about people.

Do you remember the first time they did Lyle? It was the episode Chris Evert hosted- she played his wife, her big line was, 'But I thought you were gay.' Overall it was a funny show- the skit where she can never live up to Martina was very funny- Nora Dunn played Martina.

I had never seen this and it's hysterical - too bad that in our "woke" era - this sort of comedy would be canceled
