I was lamenting the state of today's music with my friend Christopher last week -- if songs don't have a melody, lyrics or actual music, shouldn't we start calling this popular art form something beside music? -- when he tipped me off to the British singer Yola. Apparently before pursuing a solo career, she sang lead for Phantom Limb. (Not to be confused with my brother Bill's beloved Phantom Limbs.)
But it's her 2019 album, "Walk Through Fire," that has people really taking notice, featuring this instant classic that sounds like a lost song from the Dusty Springfield archives.
And "Lonely the Night," with lyrics by the great John Bettis (who wrote a bunch of Carpenters songs) gave me chills. I didn’t think it was possible to fall in love again at my age, but Yola has captured my heart! See all streaming/purchase options HERE.
