Just watched the Joan Didion documentary on Netflix, directed by her nephew Griffin Dunne ("After Hours," "Who's That Girl.") I don't think I've ever come across someone who comes across as so mousy and unassuming whose life was so bold and fascinating. Yet for all of the glamour, it's her observations of everyday humanity -- as a daughter, wife and mother -- that make Didion the literary gift she is. Catch it if you can.

I started reading Didion thirty years ago when in college I found "The White Album." I never understood why she is not held in higher esteem. Her writing is really lucid and her observations brilliant.
