Anal Attentive

When we were in D.C. over the weekend for the Pride festivities I couldn't help but notice the family-size container of Metamucil in my doctor-friend's hotel bathroom. He says he swears by it -- and insists any gay man engaging in receptive anal sex should take 2 tablespoons a day -- as opposed to the recommended 1 to 3 teaspoons. I've had irregularity issues my whole life but have never been able to stick with a fiber-supplement routines, either because it tastes gross, it doesn't seem to be working or shear laziness. Now I've been hearing about a supplement marketed toward anally active gays called Pure for Men. Have any of you ever tried it?

I tried it. All it did was block me up! Simple Metamucil does work bttr, & the orange flavor doesn't taste bad.

Too funny. I thought I was the only gay. Metamucil rules - at night, right before bed, take the 2 tblsp with water. Next morning? Easy peasy clean and mean. I swear by it. The Pure for Men is just clever packaged fiber capsules.

Tried what? I think there is a word missing.

I use the drugstore-equivalent of Benefiber, as directed (2 teaspoons 3 times/day). My gastroenterologist swears that almost all colon issues are due to not enough fiber in the diet. Anyway, the generic Benefiber is tasteless & odorless. I usually just mix it in with my water (another key to regularity is plenty of non-caffeinated liquids) and can't even tell it's in there. Label does say not recommended for use with carbonated beverages.

Drink a lot of water everyday. Most people don't.

It is basically Psyllium Seed Husks without the added flavouring or sugar - you can buy same for fraction of the cost at bulk food store. I add 2 tbsp to my breakfast yoghurt (= 6 calories, 12 grams of fiber). Good for folks in their second half-century.

fiber supplements have never agreed with me, they seem to cause more problems (bloat, cramps, gas) than any relief they claim to give - if you try pure for men, Kenneth, please report back!

I'm recovering from colorectal cancer. My treatment was radiation and chemo, no surgery. I'm cancer free now but have had problems with chronic diarrhea and fecal incontince as a result of radiation proctitis. I've been using Pure for men, although I most definitely will NOT be engaging in receptive anal sex. It seems to be a good product, but I think you could get the same results for less money with a generic psyllium husk supplement. I do find taking capsules (with plenty of water) to be preferable to a powdered mix.

I'm not anally receptive, but in my 30s I suffered from the dreaded "h" word. Two daily fiber pills work WONDERS! I swear by them.

I take 2 tablespoons of Metamucil per day, plus a couple of the Pure for Men capsules. My doctor told me it's nearly impossible to get too much fiber. Makes a HUGE difference, both for bottoming and for general digestive health.

To be honest, though, I don't know how much extra benefit I'm getting from the capsules... It's probably more clever marketing than anything else.

Have been using PURE for about a month and the improvements purported on their web site have largely been accurate. Amazed and pleased with the change in character of the fecal material that usually leaves less residue for toilet paper and less odor.

I like Bob's Red Mill Psyllium husk powder - it's high quality, more finely ground than any other fiber supplement I've tried, has almost no flavor, and works really well. Just be sure to mix it with a large glass of water - some of the problems men have result from using too little water with fiber supplements, which then don't move well inside you. http://www.bobsredmill.com/psyllium-fiber-powder.html

This works just fine for any man who has sex with men, and is probably MUCH cheaper than "Pure".

In case you did not know, 3 teaspoons is 1 tablespoon. It sounds like your doctor is suggesting doubling the maximum recommended dose. Next time I'm in for my PrEP check, I will ask my doc about it.

Pure appears to be the same as generic psyllium husk. Check for capsules in your drugstore. You can avoid all the powders and mixing etc. Same thing but the generic capsules I find (in Canada) have less content than a Pure capsule. Experiment with quantity.

I know this post was years ago. But out of curiosity.. do you remember what time during day he took them? When did he go to restroom? Trying to figure out timing of things.
