Song of the Day: 'How About Hero' by the Kelley Deal 6000

This one's not for everyone. But for all you alt-rock fans, especially those who liked the Pixies and the Breeders, I wanted to mention that I was revisiting Kelley Deal's post-rehab project and was thoroughly enjoying it. I actually saw the Kelley Deal 6000 perform back in the day with my friend Kandy at the Black Cat in Washington, D.C., but don't remember a lot about the music. What I vividly remember is that Kandy and I got there early to get a drink and noticed Kelley and some guys hanging out -- and that there were only about 10 other people in the joint. Eventually show time came and Kelley and the band came over and hung out with everybody. We asked them about their tour bus out front -- "the Shasta" -- before we all finally agreed that the show must go on, despite the rather huge concert space being virtually empty! KD6000 had just released "Go to the Sugar Altar," which is where this comes from, but the "Boom Boom Boom" follow-up has its charms too, so I recommend them both.

her solo stuff was really strong, she should've kept at it. saw the same show at the 40 watt in athens - she was, as they say, "effortless cool".
