Of course I wish him well, but I'm disheartened to see someone go from being such a positive role model to a liability. Just don't let it be fibromyalgia.

Two things:
1) Michael Sam's "people" made numerous mistakes (see: the "let's do an Oprah doc" debacle for just one example), but it's all down to Michael Sam. After the initial burst of attention, he should have disappeared and gotten in the best shape of his life for the NFL draft combine. Instead, he showed up out of shape, did very poorly. That was just the first of many missteps. Going on Dancing With The Stars? Really, in what bizzaro universe is that a good idea if you're trying to prove you're serious about playing pro football?
2) He'll never get another shot at football, the way he handled himself in Montreal was pathetic, no team will take a chance on him because he's simply not talented enough for teams to want to take that chance.
The whole thing has turned from "OMG! History in the making!!!" to "Please go away and get someone who has their head together give it a try".
Henry was a bit rough, but not wrong.
My take is that staying in the closet, particularly while a big, Black athlete, stunted his emotional growth. He only came out when Vito complained about having to sneak in and out of the window to fuck him.
--- Think about the crying and the tasteless cake smashing video. Think about the father rejecting him when he came out. I chalked some of the emotional displays off to the thought that Black people tend to be more demonstrative, but this guy is, unfortunately, in late adolescence, not his 20s, unfortunately.
I wish him well, but it is not going to be any easier for the next guy to come out unless he is of superstar ability.
Um... The above two comments... are two opinions. Both are harsh (maybe racist?) While I agree Sam proved to be a disappointment, in many ways, Sam did not perform poorly at the trials. He performed at or near his ability, and similarly to other athletes of his caliber, athletes who were drafted much more quickly. I agree he handled his whole situation poorly since the beginning, and he proved unable to deal with pretty much anything. But let's not be total creeps in talking about the situation.
Sam did not perform poorly at the trials
I'm going to guess you're not a big NFL fan because they're not called "the trials", it's called the scouting combine. He DID show up out of shape, he DID perform poorly based on the fact that he was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Hell, I have a friend who's a lawyer that can bench press more than Sam did at the combine. After he got cut by the Rams, he's done nothing to show that he's good enough to play professional football. There's thousands upon thousands of guys who were good in college but couldn't cut it in the NFL.
Yes, anti-gay sentiment played a part in his plunging in the draft, but most of it was "Why should we put up with the media hassle for a guy that can't even show up at the combine in his best shape?". There was a line of thought that he was never very interested in football, it was just a way out of a bad family situation in Texas, the fact that the first thing he did after he was drafted was announce a reality show/documentary only fed in to that.
How is it being "a total creep" to state the facts as they are known?
@macguffin Fifty four -- pointing out that Black people tend to be more demonstrative emotionally and that it is harder on a Black Gay guy to come out is NOT racist
--- it is telling the truth.
Pretending that people raised in Black culture are exactly like White people would be racist, as well as idiotic.
I am from Oakland, California, and have a bit of understanding. Take you accusations and shove them, please.
