If Orwell were alive in June of 1984, he'd have probably not liked the incredibly annoying #3, the flat-out awful #4, the corporate rock of #5 or maybe the worst song Springsteen ever released at #8 either.
I was going to add #8 but I didn't want to be descended on by Madonnabots. :-)
Here's the Top 10 when I graduated from high school in June 1978:
1. You're The One That I Want - Travolta & Newton John 2. Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibb 3. Too Much Too Little Too Late - Johnny Mathis & Denise Williams 4. Feels So Good - Chuck Mangione 5. Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty 6. It's A Heartache - Bonnie Tyler 7. On Broadway - George Benson 8. Take A Chance On Me - ABBA 9. With A Little Luck - Wings 10. This Time I'm In It For Love - Player
Yikes! #1 is ghastly, #2 is part of the inescapable Bee Gees nonsense that dominated 1978, #3 is OK but Mathis had done much better, #4 & #7 are $ong$ by re$pected jazz mu$ician$ turned pop which i$ not a bad thing, love #5 (fun to play on guitar), #6 is a good Rod Stewart ripoff, #8 has ABBA spinning their wheels, #9 is a perfect example of why John Lennon wrote "How Do You Sleep?" and #10 is a rock band doing a sappy ballad. Wow.

agree with all your points, henry, and could add a few, but wow - the memories! (while i was reaching over to pop in a club remix tape...)
