Make a Date With 'The Overnight'

Not counting "The Philadelphia Story" at BAM and a Spandau Ballet documentary at IFC, I hadn't been to a movie since "Boyhood" in the spring of 2014, which is highly unusual for me. So when I ended up seeing "The Overnight" on Sunday at the Angelika, it felt like old times -- picking a film with minimal knowledge of the plot; stumbling upon a Q&A with the cast and director afterward; drinking enough diet soda to make my bladder bust.

"The Overnight," it turns out, was right up my alley: About a Seattle couple (Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling) transplanted to Los Angeles and the wackiness that ensues when they are befriended by a couple they meet at the park (Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche). While some of the "fish out of water" elements are what you'd expect, it's the film's underlying story -- about male body image, a topic that's rarely discussed at all -- that surprised and intrigued me, and provided the catalyst for a truly original story. The less you know the better, but suffice to say all four leads are spot-on in this low-budget film shot in 10 days.
