Was This Down-Low Hubby Murdered by Woman Posing as Man?

In straighter times

I don't miss living in Washington, but boy do I miss the crime down there. Between the polyamorous Robert Wone cover-up and Lululemon "rape-murder," you can't make up shit like this. (Oh, to be a Washington Post metro reporter!) Now comes the latest, the murder of 30-year-old David Messerschmitt, a married lawyer whose bound and brutally stabbed body was found amidst a bloody scene of zip-ties, condoms, lube and an enema kit in a posh hotel room. Although married to a woman, Messerschmitt was widely known to have been active on gay hookup apps and Craigslist, using the Gmail address dcguy456.

Although security-camera footage caught what appeared to be a young black woman coming out of the hotel, no one was arrested until Messerschmitt's cuckolded/clueless(?) wife held a news conference this week begging for assistance -- then suddenly Jamyra Gallmon, 21, of Southeast D.C., was fingered and charged with first-degree felony murder while armed. While aspects of Messerschmitt's secret life were included in the criminal complaint, what's unclear is why he invited Gallmon to his room. Was he looking to get freaky with a woman? Was she supplying drugs? Or was she was posing as a man -- the masculine-sounding email address "chrissanchez0906" -- responding to his ad?

From my brother, who has been following the case from the beginning:
Yep. It keeps getting more bizarre. Maybe if she had a gun it would sort of make sense. Or if she were male and she could put restraints on him in the course of their encounter. But she really expected to overpower a random male, who presumably would cry false advertising when a female showed up? (And it actually worked?) And for a woman without a previous criminal record to quit her job and start in on a life of violent crime is also hard to believe. This should be Season 2 of "Serial." Or maybe Robert Wone should be.
Get ready, kids. Nothing's ever as it seems in our nation's capital ...

A D.C. friend notes:
From the police report, the killer states that the hotel room door was open, which if true explains why he was not aware that she was female. I am thinking he could have been naked on the bed, faced away from the door and ready for an anonymous hookup.
