Happy 50th Birthday to Sarah Jessica Parker!

You may be getting up there, SJP, but you're still the "unsexiest" woman alive in my book!

People who know me are well-aware of my love slash mostly hate relationship with Mrs. Matthew Broderick. After (too) much consideration, I've recently come to the realization the reason I despise her so much -- yet watched two of her shows religiously -- is probably the exact reason why she's so beloved by so many others: her ordinariness. When I look at, say, Justin Timberlake, I think to myself: Wow. I’m not a fan but I get it. He's incredibly good-looking and incredibly talented and can do just about anything -- no wonder he's a superstar. But when I look at SJP, I think to myself: that could be anyone (on a starvation diet), so it annoys me -- a lot. (The woman's worth hundreds of millions, yet she's so average!) But then I remind myself a certain girl-next-door quality -- even of the chainsmoking hag variety -- can take a gal a long way and I try to relax. Of course, just when I decide that's her appeal -- and Maxim names her the unsexiest woman alive -- I begin to think I must be in the minority somewhat here. She's constantly being shoved down our throats as a sex symbol -- warts and all -- and John F. Kennedy Jr., Ferris Bueller and Robert Downey Jr. seemed to agree. One's gay and one's on drugs, but what was John-John thinking???

For me, the real kick in the pants was when I recently watched the bonus interviews on the "Square Pegs" DVDs and realized this has been going on forever. I believe it was creator Anne Beatts who said she didn't think Parker could play the role of bookworm Patty Greene because she was "way too pretty," a statement that nearly caused me to choke on my Crystal Light. Beatts said they had to put those "huge glasses" on Parker to tone down her incredible beauty(!), and it was only because of this hideous disguise that she was able to pull the part off.

Um ... if you say so!

According to Wikpedia: Parker is descended from Esther Elwell, one of the accused during the Salem witch trials.

Descended from? That IS Esther Elwell!

You're right, it's her ordinariness that is appealing. There are people who will say their favorite SATC city is Samantha or Miranda or Charlotte, but no - everyone's favorite character was Carrie. Always Carrie.

Couldn't agree more. To say she's plain is being generous. As she ages she only gets more hard and used up looking. I'd say perhaps her personality might make up for it but she seems like a bitch so it can't be that either.
