They say it's often something small that finally does you in once you get to be a certain age -- a minor slip in the tub or fall on the stairs -- but for the life of me I can't understand why an 81-year-old woman would be allowed to have (what sounds like) elective surgery (anesthesia has real risks at any age, people). I'm guessing it's the Conrad Murray situation -- Joan's a star and probably insisted on having her vocal cords tightened, or whatever -- but all I can say is that I was a lifelong fan (I even visited the studio of her short-lived late-night talk show that nearly ended her career!) and am very sad to see her go. The last time I saw her she offered me guidance on my upcoming book and made me feel like I was the only person in the world. Her ability to be entirely raunchy on stage and then a sweetheart of a grandmother off made truly special in my heart.

Hi Kenneth: I'd bet a lot of your readers would welcome more info on how you met Joan Rivers and how your interactions with her went etc. She had so many fans and a more detailed personal reminiscence from you would be really great. Thanks for thinking about this, Marty in Clearwater FL
Marty: A good friend of mine produced her standing gig at a little basement club on 42nd St. where Joan would try out new material. Got to see and meet her a number of times -- and she was always raunchy on stage and a sweetheart off. Last time I got to chat with her my book was just about to come out. She was so kind -- grandmotherly, if you will -- asked a bunch of questions and gave me advice on promoting it, etc. She made me feel like I was the only person in the world, even though she had just come off stage and was exhausted! xo
