Song of the Day: 'New England' by Tanya Donelly

With my friend Sergio

In honor of my long weekend in Provincetown, here's a favorite by the former Belly queen. For those who have heard me diss the place, I had a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better time up there than the two times I went in the 1990s, but I realize this had way more to do with the great company I kept this time than any changes in actual opinion of Ptown. (I went with an uptight, short-lived boyfriend, whom I immediately ran into at the Boatslip on Thursday!) The mosquitoes are still unbearable, the beach is still 10,000 miles away through a malaria-friendly swamp, and the Boston guys are still rather suspicious of anyone not from their parts. (And the townies kept asking me if I was from Rhode Island!!!!) Yet despite this, I had a blast hanging out with some good friends and making a few new ones. What I will say now, though, is that this song's sentiment remains lost on me, yet I could see how it would mean so much to a New England native. I think that's why Ptown doesn't capture my imagination the way even, say, Rehoboth Beach (where I started going as a young boy) does: I have no familial history with the place and no fond remembrances stored in the bank. Still, with this new great set of memories, I still hold out hope that I can build on this trip and have a later-in-life-love affair with New England, because as I look at the houses and the beautiful surroundings, even I am surprised I don't find it more charming. Wonder how I would feel in Saugutuck in my native Michigan ...
