Maid Me Crazy

Anyone know what the right amount is to tip a maid after five nights in a hotel? She didn't really clean much, but she did an incredible job of hiding the charger for my phone and folding the last square of toilet paper into an adorable triangle.

$5. per day is generous at $50. per room rate day, no taxes or extras. $10 per $100, etc. Think of it as giving a 20% tip in a restaurant, Half that is probably what most tippers do because a $200 room is only worth $100 anyway. Most people leave nothing.

At what point do we have to subsidize the employees of ALL enterprises so their employers don't have to pay a decent wage for the work performed? If you were a slob and made major work for the "maid" to clean up, more than the usual work expected...YES...reward that employee for the extra work they have done for you. If they only did cursory room cleaning, which is part of their daily job, I don't see a tip as necessary (so I'm with the most people mentioned by Paulesso)... If we buy a car do we need to go tip the workers who made it in the factory? Do we tip the desk clerk because they checked us in and out? Where is the line drawn? Waitstaff in restaurants and bars receive below minimum wage often...they are exempt from my rant. Hotel workers have a strong union who bargain for a decent wage...they are not exempt from my rant.

$5 a day is standard IF you have your room cleaned daily. If I'm staying just one or two nights, I Just put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door since they typically provide towels for 4, and who really needs the bed made daily? Then I don't usually tip. But daily room service...$5 a day for stays of 2 nights or more.

$5/day is good. Add extra for special services (fresh sheets/extra towels) or if she (or he) does an especially good job or goes above and beyond. Add another dollar or two per person as needed. Tipping daily is preferred; someone different may be taking care of your room each day. (I say this as someone who often stays in hotels and whose father was in hotel management for many years.) It's not just making your bed, replacing towels and vacuuming; these gals and guys are cleaning your toilet.

You should leave a tip daily, not just one big tip at the end of your stay. You will not have the same maid cleaning your room every day.

Don't know where you stayed in LA but the hotel employees in the LAX area make $15/hour. I am one of those people who don't tip except in low wage foreign countries. If you do tip, follow Brad K's advice of daily tipping.
