Long Beach, Calif. -- a city of 500,000 -- has elected its youngest, and first gay and Hispanic mayor! I always loved that place. When I got to Southern California I landed on my friend's couch in Huntington Beach, two towns down the coast from Long Beach. We used to drive up there to go to the bars all the time -- I think one was the Silver Fox, and Ripples had a beer bust on Sundays, plus there were a half-dozen other bars within walking distance, too. When I got hired by The Orange County Register, I knew I didn't want to stay in the O.C., so seriously considered compromisng and moving to Long Beach -- before giving in to my L.A. wishes and the god-awful commute that came with it.
