What Were You Thinking, Betty?

Mom called to say her aunt Betty died today. My great aunt was the matriarch of our family and a fun one at that. (Her third husband was Johnny Walker.) Mom claims Betty was old even when Mom was a little girl, and at 95 (born in 1918!) she lived a full life before losing her way to old age a few years ago. Still, hearing my mother mention that she and Mom's less-than-two-years-older sister were now "next in line" was a sobering realization. Call me selfish, but I'm hoping I can get another 20 out of Mom. (She turns 72 later this month.) The fates can even keep the few extra bad years at the end. Playing cards just won't be the same without you, Betty. :-(

My Dad died 2 months ago and I was devastated by the fact that I would not see or touch or hear or talk to him anymore. What I am glad we did, and I would highly recommend this to you, is we gave Dad a tape recorder and had him record a journal about anything he wanted to talk about. We also took home videos over the years. When I hear his voice on the recording, I feel such comfort. It does get a little better with time, but I will see something that will remind me of him and I will get this nostalgic feeling, but mostly a feeling of just missing him. I am sure it will stick with me until I die.

Great photo -- she sounds like an interesting character. Sorry to hear about her passing...
