Song of the Day: 'Nice Work If You Can Get It' by Cybill Shepherd

Ended up going to see "Nice Work if You Can Get It' on Broadway with my parents and their friends the other night. Although my recap of dinner with them on Saturday was meant affectionately, I still took to heart some of your comments about remembering to appreciate every minute I have with my mom as we all get older -- so made sure I got the most out of our big evening on the town. I realized this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity -- it was her first Broadway show, and who knows if she'll come back for another -- so why not love every second of being the one who took her to it? The show is featherweight but cute and entertaining. (Michael added a little edge to the excusion by asking the people who thougth they were sitting in their living room chatting to kindly shut the fuck up.) Mom's friends all adore Matthew Broderick, and with a Gershwin score, who could ask for anything more? (Well, other than them listening to me and getting tickets to "I'll Eat You Last" with Bette Midler across the street!) Afterward, I took them to the Brooklyn Diner, where I first fell in love with noodle kugel, a dish my mom and I tried to make last Thanksgiving only to find out the recipe had a typo and was ruined by 10 times too much salt! Mom loved the good stuff -- I've since mastered it myself -- and everyone headed back to the hotel with their stomachs full and smiles on their faces. And so did I. Speaking of smiling: All through the show I couldn't help but think of Cybill Shepherd's rendition of "Nice Work," whch she recorded for the opening credits of her kinda-good sitcom, "Cybill." (Maryann ruled. It had Michelle Pfeiffer's little sister, a young Peter Krause and a second-string Darlene.) I was a Cybill addict in the '80s and '90s and even went so far as to buy her albums, including "Vanilla," which includes Gershwin's "S'Wonderful" -- also in the show -- as well as her hitting the most off-key note ever on Rodgers and Hart's "I Didn't Know What Time It Was"!

Too many people think the theater is their living room, and that they can give running commentary on the show. Or that their text message is highly important and cannot wait until intermission.

Glad everyone had a good time!

"Cybill" the sitcom was pretty good i if not exactly outstanding. I was a regular watcher but as with many "okay" sitcoms, all I can recall about it today was that Christine Baranski was great (as usual) and Alicia Witt's smartalecky daughter was a bit of a runner-up to Darlene on "Roseanne".

Matthew Broderick looks like such a Catskills Jew comedian now, but...amazingly...he's of half Irish descent. Even has a house in Ireland.
