Italy Killed the Video Store


In case you missed it, the Village Voice has an exhaustive -- if not slightly exhausting -- cover story about the strange fate of Kim's Video, which many New Yorkers remember as the ultimate video store, with more than 55,000 new, experimental and esoteric titles. After closing the Mondo Kim's location in 2008, owner Yongman Kim sought to turn his ecclectic collection to a local university or archivist -- only to see it land in town in Sicily, where the new "arts friendly" mayor promised it would be kept accessible to cinephiles.
