Jimmy Ellis, the front man of seminal disco band The Trammps, died Thursday at a South Carolina nursing home. He was 74. Best known for their monster hit "Disco Inferno," I was surprised to read that the song -- which became an anthem of the era after being featured in the film "Saturday Night Fever" -- only reached No. 11 on the Billboard charts when it was rereleased in 1978. (It actually stalled at No. 53 when it originally came out in 1976.) The soundtrack for "Saturday Night Fever" would go on to become one of the biggest-selling albums of all time, and won each of the artists a Grammy in 1979 for Album of the Year, capping an incredible ride for the boys from Philadelphia, who were one of the first disco bands ever. (I was always a "That's Where the Happy People Go" man myself!) Thanks for the music, Mr. Ellis. Read
