Kristy McNichol: 'Yep, I'm Gay'

Well, she didn't get the People magazine treatment this time, but Kristy McNichol has finally officially come out of the closet, telling the mag (through her publicist -- she's reclusive as ever) that "she hopes that coming out can help kids who need support. She would like to help others who feel different." McNichol, 49, has has been with her lover, Martie Allen, for the past 20 years, and tells People that she chose to speak out about her sexuality -- and share a photo -- because she is "approaching 50" and wants to "be open about who I am." (Good for her!) Despite being far less masculine than she was, I was frequently mistaken for Kristy as a kid -- how I loved her, in everything from "Family" and "Battle of the Network Stars" to "Only When I Laugh" and "The Pirate Movie" -- which put me in the odd position of having to deny being both a girl and a suspected lesbian. Congrats, Buddy! (Via Towleroad by way of Boy Culture)

In related news, Liberace's letter from the grave announcing he was gay, was read to the public today.

Shock! Kidding aside, I never got those that seek their own validation from stars coming out officially. The best stars are those that keep private lives private.

Loved her on "Family" and in "Little Darlings" - still waiting for that film to hit DVD, but because of music licensing, it won't see the light of day anytime soon.

@Anonymous ("Anonymous"...well, you do practice what you preach at least!):

I don't think people need "validation" from stars coming out; I feel valid (to say the least). It's just cool to see when someone you're superfamiliar with shares a similar trait. Politically, it's important because there is strength in numbers and there is strength in showing that we as a group are not ashamed.

As for the greatest stars being those who keep their private lives private, you're just wrong. There is no such thing as a "star" who keeps their private lives private. Their private lives are what help to propel the greatest stars into the stratosphere—Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland. If you're talking about people like Meryl Streep, she's more of a famous actress than a star, and while she and many others like her are less inclined to publicize their private lives, EVERY famous person does, in fact, use aspects of their personal lives to promote their work.

Loved her on Empty Nest. The other shows were a bit before my time.

@ Matthew - no, Matty, I am not "wrong," I just have a different opinion than yours and therein lies the problem. On gays requiring other gays to come out --blah blah blah, zzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Now if only Christopher Atkins would come out too! Pumpin and Blowin!
