'Meet Monica Velour,' But Do It at Home

Michael, Scooter and I saw "Meet Monica Velour" over the weekend. Went into it with modest expectations yet it still managed to underwhelm me. Writer/director Keith Bearden had a GREAT idea -- a teenage misfit befriends the (now-washed-up) porn star of his dreams after a chance encounter en route to selling his grandfather's hot-dog truck the summer after graduation(!) -- but then the film quickly disintegrates into cliches and unrealistic scenarios. It's a shame because the kid (Dustin Ingram) and the has-been porn star (Kim Cattrall) are completely ready to deliver, Cattrall's in-and-out "blue collar" accent notwithstanding, yet they're reduced to playing the stereotypical male/female "quit trying to control me" crap we've seen all too often. Still, "Meet Monica Velour" has its moments -- and a lot of heart (Keith David's scenes in particular) -- and is worth a home rental.

Bummer! Ever since I learned they filmed this entirely in Michigan, I've been wanting to see it. Did you recognize any of the locales?
