A Polack and a Faggot Walk Out of a Closet ...

In the new documentary "Polack," filmmaker James Kenney goes in search of the source of the Polish joke in America, but the harrowing results -- Skinheads, Twinks and Communists, oh my! -- force him to come to terms with his childhood shame of being both a closeted Polack and closeted homosexual, at a time when being either made you next to nothing in America. Jim is an old friend of mine -- although the last time I saw him we were 20-somethings working together at the National Gallery of Art -- but I don't think it influenced my feelings about the film, which I found to be compelling and often shocking.
