Nadal Falls Down Under

Sucks that Rafael Nadal got injured during his quarterfinal match against David Ferrer. For years, Nadal and Roger Federer rarely met in Grand Slam tournaments because Nadal couldn't play well enough on anything but clay. Now injuries have robbed us of a bunch of showdowns. What is touted as one sport's greatest rivalries sure hasn't lived up to its potential.

Totally disagree. I think it's one of the greatest rivalries of modern men's tennis. It's no Chrissie v. Martina, but one can make a strong argument that Federer is the greatest men's player ever, and yet he has a losing record against Nadal 14-8. And Nadal has more Slam victories than Federer did at the same age. And they've traded the #1 spot over the last several years. And they've had some great matches. As far as head to head rivalries, I can't think of anything even close to it since the '70s.

PS Love your blog.

Really? I think their rivalry has been amazing. They have played each other in the finals of seven grand slams in the past four years. IMHO, anything more than that would mean that the field is too shallow.

You guys make great points, and when you (Rog) point out the SEVEN Grand Slam finals, it makes me sound crazy. But you have to remember that until Rafa finally beat Roger at Wimbledon, the first six were completely predictable (Rafa wins on clay, Roger wins on grass). But ever since it's been sort of "anyone's match," they've only played in ONE Grand Slam final -- TWO YEARS ago -- and now we're supposed to be in the thick of the so-called rivalry.

It's not Rafa's fault that Roger has lost early here and there, and it's not Roger's fault that Rafa has been oft-injured. But the clock is running ...

On this we agree: it would be great to see them play each other more! It's important to remember that while they've had a good rivalry, Nadal's and Federer's age difference (6 years, I believe) prevented a Chris-Martina type of thing (they are less than 2 years of age apart) or Pete-Andre (same age).

PS: Love your tennis items, obviously!
