Congratulations to Darlene Love for her long-overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! While it's her signature holiday song -- "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home") -- that still shines the spotlight on her every year, her contributions to music are staggering -- "He's a Rebel," "(Today I Met) The Boy I'm Gonna Marry," Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Da," "Wait Till My Bobby Gets Home"and "He's Sure the Boy I Love," to name a few -- and frequently overlooked. I had the great pleasure of seeing Darlene's "Portrait of a Singer" show at the Bottom Line back in '94 -- I even inadvertently wound up with her paycheck from the night -- and remember it as one of the greatest music events of my life. While she plays in New York every Christmas, amazingly I haven't found the chance to see her in the years since. Truth be told, this is mainly because I always go to the Ronnie Specter Christmas Party instead. (There she goes again, gettin' no respect.) The gals are competing for fans on the same weekend in New York City again this holiday season, but this time I'm giving all my love to Darlene, whose time has finally come.
It's nice to see that she's FINALLY getting the respect she so richly deserves. Can't wait for her annual Letterman appearance. If you ever meet her (and I know you will), give a kiss from me!
