Young Love, Interrupted

File this under "special" rights:

Brad, a psychology student from Iowa, joined the Peace Corps and and ended up falling in love with Raul in Ecuador. If this happened to any straight American, this love-in-bloom would be something to celebrate. But because cupid struck two men, the U.S. government is making it next to impossible for this couple to build a life together:

Raul and I have some difficult decisions to make. When I return to Ecuador in January, we will spend a lot of time discussing them and weighing our options. Our only hope is that things will change quickly. We are both committed to helping bring about that change. As a gay binational couple we cannot ignore the discrimination. We hope others out there will read this story and join in this effort.

I am in the same boat, sort of. I am English and live with my (American) partner in London - we have been together 3 years.

His job prospects are much better back in the US, so ideally we would like to move there: but we can't because I couldn't come with him.(I could come on vacation for 3 months then leave again then re-enter then leave then re-enter.....not ideal and not what we want).

We are "civil partnered" in the UK which means nothing in the US.

If we were a male/female couple this wouldn't be a problem - we would get married and I would be able to get a long-term residents' permit, a green card and/or a passport.

But I can't because we are two guys, so he has to stick to a crummier job in the UK, with no real prospect of career advancement here.

So that's fair then!!
