Just what the gay community needs -- another self-loathing asshole. (I'll be kind and leave out "ugly.") Can't we reject Ken Mehlman's application, or maybe make him and Mary Cheney get married and live "happily ever ever" now that he wants to fight for "gay marriage"? What a disgrace to mankind.
I think your article is way too harsh on the guy. He never pushed the anti-gay agenda directly and he even made some minor protests to anti-gay GOP policies, but says he couldn't do much more because of strong party consensus. And now he's doing fundraising and strategizing to repeal Prop 8.
The main argument you can make against him is that, by leading the GOP, he was implicit in getting anti-gay politicians elected. But had he stepped down, the person who took his place would've probably beaten the anti-gay drum even harder, though he might not have been as successful for the party overall.
Yes, he wasn't as vocal as he could have been because he was closeted and he may have played an indirect role in anti-gay legislation, but he doesn't seem to have been an active enemy to the gay community and he's now doing good work on its behalf. So after a very public – and presumably very hard – coming out I'd hope that we'd all show him more support than calling him a "disgrace to mankind."
Ethan: Try Googling; Mehlman DID, in fact, directly and persuasively push the anti-gay and the anti-marriage equality agenda, as did his bosses and everyone he worked with and for.
The tribe is becoming disillusioned with Pres. Obama. Acceptance of SSM is gaining a percentage point every 9 months. And hating Islam is quite popular with right leaning independents while hating bois whom do with bois is trending down.
It became apparent when the conservative press didn't have a week long apoplectic fit over the prop 8 ruling.
I looked at the news clips on Joe My God and they didn't seem to say much about Melhman's direct role. They said he presided over the party while these policies were created, but again that's very different from pushing them.
My assertion that he didn't push them is from my reading of the Atlantic article on his coming out.
If that article is incomplete and he did in fact play a bigger role, then I agree with all of you that his current work against Prop 8 doesn't erase the past. But so far I haven't seen much to that effect.
The reason we have to fight so hard for basic civil rights now is because of his highly-paid efforts to deny us those civil rights. He can bite my ass as far as I'm concerned. And not in a good way.

Shameless. Mehlman should be the focus of a good olde fashioned shunning.
And how ironic, the verify word for this comment is "honest."
joemygod.blogspot.com has a good review of Mehlman's's horrendous anti-gay accomplishments.
This is just the GOP going after some votes.

Can you wonderful gays in New York City please protest his place there and kick him OUT of Chelsea?
Thanks!
